THE MICHAEL CONROY PERPETUAL MEMORIAL CUP.

On Sunday 17th of October the penultimate competition of the year took place on Lough Skeen Ballyfarnon. The was The MICHAEL CONROY PERPETUAL MEMORIAL CUP.
33 Anglers togged out for action on what turned out to be a fine day for fishing and they were not disappointed by the fishing. In total 37 fish were caught and released on the day.
The day got off to a flying start with debutant angler Deirdre Molloy catching her first ever fish 15 Min's into the competition a pike the weighed just under 3lbs, this was not the only one in that boat at that time as her fishing partner Declan Conroy weighted in a pike of 8lbs 30z to give him an early lead. Martin Suffin then followed with a fine fish of 7 lbs 3oz.There were a number of other fish weighed in in the next half hour but the next big one was brought in by Richard Connolly about 12 noon.

After quite a struggle to get him in Richard and his partner Gerry MC Glynn weighed in a great fish of 16lbs 4oz. The sight of this fish gave alot of anglers the hope that there was something big for them out there . In the first hour and a half of this competition there were 12 fish caught. as the day progressed there were a number of fish weighed in between 5, 6 and 7 lbs out by various competitors including the main players in the race for fisherman of the year, who were Tom Commins , Declan Conroy, Jim Clarke and Myles Quinn.

About half 2 the next big fish was weighed and this was caught by Jane Suffin. This was a great looking fish of 14lbs 3 oz and it put Jane into second place.

This fish was closely followed by another fine fish of 10lbs 7 oz caught by Micheal Egan which was good enough to earn him third place.
As persistent shower of rain around 3:45 that lasted a half hour slowed down thing but at the end of the competition a flurry of smaller fish ranging from 1lbs odd to 7 lbs odd were weighed withe the biggest of them weighted in by Eamon Conroy and Jim Clarke which brought the total of fish to 37.
Both juniors who fish on the Ben Egan and Joe Egan caught fish with Joe winning that category.
So the result was .
1st Richard Connolly 16lbs 4oz
2nd Jane Suffin 14lbs 3 oz
3rd Micheal Egan 10lbs 7oz.

COMMONS WINS AGAIN

On Sunday 3rd of October, Boyle & District Anglers fished for the Donnellan Cup on Lough Na Blaithe outside Elphin.
Weather conditions were perfect for the 21 competing anglers. Eighteen fish were caught and released on the day with most of the anglers adding to their total weights for the title of Angler Of The Year 2010.
Largest number of fish caught by one angler on the day was seven by Declan Conroy, the heaviest weighing in at 12lb 10oz and looking like a clear winner
until with half an hour to go to the end of the competition, Tom Commons and his boat partner, Joe Tormey, rang the weigh master with news of a good catch from the furthest end of the lake. Tom weighed in a cracking fish of 19lb 4oz for what was to be a personal best and worthy winner.
Joe, of course claimed responsibility for helping to land the fish as he said a calm head was required after a lengthy battle.
Tom is now in poll position on the leader board followed closely by Declan Conroy and Jim Clarke.
Jim, who won last months competition, finished in third place this time with two good fish, best of which weighed in at 5lb 1oz.

Presentation of prizes took place in the Moylurg Inn in Boyle on Sunday night and the club would like to thank Aaron and Kevin for their hospitality.
Our next outing will be on Sunday the 17th of October on Lough Skean near Ballyfarnon where We will compete for the Michael Conroy Perpetual Memorial cup. Fishing from 11am to 5pm.
This competition is open to all anglers, and with one competition remaining after the 17th, any one of the top ten anglers are still in with a chance of claiming the title for 2010.

Paddy Kelly 2010

On Sunday the 5th of September Boyle and District Angling Club headed for Lough Gara and fished for the Paddy Kelly Perpetual Memorial cup. The late Paddy Kelly hailed from Memphis and was a one time owner of the Memphis bar (formerly the railway bar) on Elphin street. During his short stay in Boyle Paddy make good friends with the Boyle and District Angling Club. Anyone familiar with our Easter angling competition will be aware that it was Paddy that started the barbecue and cooking facilities at the competition for us back in 2002. In 2003 he presented the club with the Paddy Kelly Cup.
Paddy left Boyle to return to Memphis in October 2004 and before he left he offered the club the chance to buy the now famous barbecue. Sadly shortly after returning to Memphis Paddy passed away and we now honour his memory annually with the fishing of the Paddy Kelly Perpetual Memorial Cup. This year a total of 29 anglers too part in the competition on a breezy but sunny day. fishing was slow to start but as the day wore on there were some good catches recorded. The biggest number of fish caught on the day by one angler was four, by John Keenehan which moved him closer to the top of the table for the angler of the year award. The heaviest of John fish also netted him 3rd place. Joe Mulrennan also moved up the league table with two good catches the heaviest of which gave him second place in the competition.
The winner for the second time having also won in 2004 and now leading the angler of the year league was Jim Clarke with two catches on the day the heaviest weighting over 10lbs. Jim has a habit of winning club competitions over the years and is always thereabouts at the end of the season when it comes to lifting the angler of the year award. With three Competition remaining and some of the more seasoned anglers not recording over the weekend it looking like an exciting finish to our angling year.
Presentation of prizes took place in An Craobhin bar on Sunday night and the next outing will be the Donnellan Cup on Sunday the 3rd of October.
Calendar of Events Remaining

Boyle and District Angling Club

Boyle and District Angling Club recently fished for what has now become our main charity event for the year " The Martin Mitchell Perpetual Memorial Cup" . All monies collected over the weekend of the 5Th of may 2010 i.e. entries to the competition public donations and a house draw at the presentation, were this year donated to The Plunkett Home Patient Comfort Fund in Boyle.
Following some consultation with the staff at the Plunkett Home we decided that rather than give a presentation of a cheque that the club would purchase a number of televisions for the patients that were confined to their rooms.
Thankful with the generosity of the public and a club donation we were able to purchase 5 televisions.
we wish the patients and staff of the Plunkett Home in Boyle the best of luck for the future and many happy hours viewing.

EASTER PIKE ANGLING FESTIVAL 2010

Easter Pike Angling Festival 2010

Boyle and district angling club hosted the 18th Annual Easter Pike Angling Festival over the weekend in reasonably favourable weather conditions. A large number of anglers, spectators and well wishers attended at the Doon Shore on both days of the competition.
we also celebrated the 30th anniversary of the formation of our club.

On shore entertainment and regular updates of information were provided by Dj Richie Burke and Martin Walshe.

As usual the ladies at the BBQ and catering marquee ably helped by Jordan Maye, did themselves proud with the range of foods they provide to ensure that no angler or spectator went away hungry.

Members from the regional fisheries board attended at every weigh station to verify correct weights for participating anglers.

Our own trained first aid officers were on duty but were thankfully not called into action.

The Boyle and District Angling Club patrol boat and crew kept a watchful eye on proceeding throughout the two days promoting fair play and ensuring the safety of all participating anglers.

The numbers of fish caught over the weekend were down on previous years probably due to the cold snap in the weather in the week leading up to the event, However some big fish were caught and the following anglers were the big winners over the two days.
